How to Stop Waswas — Fighting Shaitan’s Whispers

“Did I pray that wrong? Let me start over.” “Was my wudu valid? Better redo it.” “Am I even a real Muslim?”

Sound familiar? Those aren’t your thoughts. That’s Shaitan. And he has a name for this operation: Waswas.

Waswas is obsessive whispering. Doubt. Anxiety about your worship. And it’s one of Shaitan’s most effective weapons — because it disguises itself as piety.

What Is Waswas?

Allah told us directly: “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind… from the evil of the retreating whisperer — who whispers in the breasts of mankind.” (Quran 114:1-5)

An entire surah — Surah An-Nas — was revealed about this. That’s how real the threat is.

How Waswas Works

  1. Plant a doubt. “Did you say Bismillah? I don’t think you did.”
  2. Make you repeat. You redo the action. “Just to be safe.”
  3. Escalate. Now you doubt the repeat too. So you do it again.
  4. Exhaust you. Eventually prayer feels like torture instead of peace. And that’s exactly what Shaitan wanted.

That’s the Vampire Grid’s spiritual division. It drains your energy by making you fight yourself instead of fighting Shaitan.

7 Ways to Defeat Waswas

1. Seek Refuge in Allah

The moment waswas hits, say: “A’udhu billahi minash-shaitanir-rajim.” Don’t engage with the thought. Just seek refuge and MOVE ON.

2. Never Repeat Your Worship

Did you make wudu? Yes? Then it’s valid. Move on. Did you pray? Yes? Then it counts. Move on.

3. Spit Lightly to Your Left (3 times)

The Prophet ﷺ told a companion who suffered from waswas in prayer to spit lightly three times to his left and say “A’udhu billahi minash-shaitan.” He did it, and the waswas never came back. (Muslim)

4. Recite Surah An-Nas and Al-Falaq

These two surahs are specifically for protection against Shaitan’s whispers. Include them in your Morning Duas guide.

5. Know That Doubt = Faith

The Prophet ﷺ said: “That is pure faith.” when companions told him they had terrible thoughts. (Muslim) Shaitan doesn’t whisper to people who don’t believe. If you’re having waswas, it means your faith is strong enough for him to attack.

6. Ignore It Completely

Don’t analyze the thought. Don’t engage. The more attention you give waswas, the stronger it gets. Starve it.

7. Stay Busy with Worship

An idle mind is Shaitan’s playground. Fill your day with dhikr, Quran, Tahajjud guide, and productive work.

When to Seek Professional Help

If waswas is severely affecting your daily life — please seek help from both a trusted scholar AND a mental health professional. There’s no shame in this.

Document your experiences in The Architect’s Ledger. Write down when waswas hits, what triggers it, and how you fought it. Over time, you’ll see your victories.

Shaitan is a whisperer. Allah is your Protector. The whisperer loses every time you turn to the Protector. AHOO.
