Silicon Valley calls it “intermittent fasting.” They act like they invented it.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ practiced it 1,400 years ago.
Every Monday and Thursday. Three days each lunar month. The entire month of Ramadan. And the Sunnah fast of Dawud — fasting every other day, which modern science now calls the most effective fasting protocol for longevity.
What the Prophet ﷺ Knew About Fasting
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Fast and you will be healthy.” (Ibn as-Sunni)
He also said: “The son of Adam fills no vessel worse than his stomach.” (Tirmidhi)
This wasn’t just spiritual advice. This was a health prescription from divine revelation — and modern science is racing to catch up.
What Science Now Confirms
Autophagy — When you fast, your body cleans out damaged cells and regenerates new ones. Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi won the Nobel Prize in 2016 for discovering this. The Prophet ﷺ activated it every week.
Growth Hormone — Fasting increases human growth hormone by up to 500% (Hartman ML, 1992). Builds muscle. Burns fat. Slows aging.
Insulin Sensitivity — Fasting resets insulin resistance (the root cause of type 2 diabetes). Ramadan studies show improved insulin sensitivity in just 30 days.
Brain Function — Fasting increases BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) — the protein that grows new brain cells. Sharper mind. Better memory. Reduced Alzheimer’s risk.
Longevity — Caloric restriction and intermittent fasting are the ONLY interventions proven to extend lifespan in every species tested.
The Prophetic Fasting Schedule
The Prophet ﷺ didn’t follow one fasting protocol. He practiced multiple — each one now validated by science:
- Monday & Thursday — Weekly 16-18 hour fasts (dawn to sunset). Science: optimal for fat burning and autophagy.
- 3 White Days — 13th, 14th, 15th of each lunar month. Science: aligned with lunar cycles, shown to affect human metabolism.
- Ramadan — 30 consecutive days of fasting. Science: complete metabolic reset, improved gut microbiome, reduced inflammation.
- Fast of Dawud — Every other day. Science: the most effective intermittent fasting protocol for longevity (Mattson et al., 2017).
How to Break Your Fast — The Prophetic Way
The Prophet ﷺ broke his fast with dates and water. Not a feast. Not a buffet. Dates and water.
Why? Dates provide natural glucose to replenish liver glycogen. Water rehydrates. Simple sugars hit the bloodstream fast without spiking insulin the way processed food does. Then he would pray Maghrib — giving his stomach time before eating a light meal.
Modern nutritionists now recommend the exact same approach: break a fast with simple natural sugars, hydrate, wait 20 minutes, then eat a moderate meal.
The Prophet ﷺ did it first.
