Sleep scientists spent decades and billions of dollars discovering the “perfect” sleep protocol. Right side. Dark room. No screens before bed. Early to bed, early to rise. Cool temperature.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ practiced all of it — 1,400 years ago.
The Prophet’s Sleep Position
The Prophet ﷺ slept on his right side, with his right hand under his cheek.
Modern sleep medicine confirms: sleeping on the right side improves heart function (the heart doesn’t bear body weight), aids digestion (stomach and intestines drain naturally), reduces acid reflux, and improves lymphatic drainage from the brain (the glymphatic system).
The Prophet ﷺ also forbade sleeping on the stomach — modern research links prone sleeping to neck pain, spinal misalignment, and reduced breathing quality.
The Shutdown Protocol
The Prophet ﷺ had a specific end-of-day routine:
- Isha prayer — performed early, then straight to bed. No “hanging out” after.
- No unnecessary conversation after Isha — the original “no screens before bed.”
- Wudu before sleep — cleanliness and a calming ritual.
- Dusting the bed — the Prophet ﷺ dusted his bed three times before lying down.
- Sleep adhkar — specific Duas and Quran recitation (Ayatul Kursi, last 3 Surahs). Modern meditation research shows recitation calms the nervous system and reduces sleep onset latency.
- Dark room — the Prophet ﷺ recommended covering vessels and extinguishing lights. Darkness triggers melatonin production — the sleep hormone.
The Prophetic Nap: Qaylulah
The Prophet ﷺ took a short nap (Qaylulah) in the early afternoon — before Dhuhr or after it.
NASA’s nap studies show a 26-minute nap improves pilot performance by 34% and alertness by 54%. The European Society of Cardiology found that regular afternoon napping reduces cardiovascular mortality. The Prophet ﷺ was 1,400 years ahead of NASA.
Tahajjud: The Secret Hour
The Prophet ﷺ woke in the last third of the night for Tahajjud (night prayer). Modern sleep research shows: the last third of night is dominated by REM sleep — the phase for memory consolidation, emotional processing, and creativity. Waking during this window with intentional meditation or prayer accesses the most neurologically active phase of sleep.
It’s not coincidence that the Quran says: “Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence of heart and tongue.” (73:6)
