How to Do Ruqyah on Yourself — Spiritual Self-Protection in Islam

You don’t need a sheikh. You don’t need a special person. You can protect yourself.

Ruqyah is the Islamic practice of using Quran and authentic duas for healing and protection. And the best ruqyah? The one you do on yourself.

Aisha (RA) narrated: “When the Prophet ﷺ went to bed every night, he would cup his hands together, blow into them, recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas, then wipe his hands over his body — starting from his head and face and the front of his body. He would do this three times.” (Bukhari)

What Is Ruqyah?

Ruqyah means using verses of the Quran, names and attributes of Allah, and authentic duas from the Sunnah to seek Allah’s healing and protection from evil eye, envy, jinn, sihr, and general spiritual harm.

Important: Ruqyah MUST be from the Quran and Sunnah. No made-up words. No strange rituals. The power is in Allah’s words.

How to Do Ruqyah on Yourself — Step by Step

Step 1: Make Wudu

Be in a state of cleanliness. Face the Qibla if possible.

Step 2: Have Sincerity and Trust

Your ruqyah works because of Tawakkul article — your trust in Allah. You’re asking the Creator of the universe to heal and protect you. Believe He will.

Step 3: Recite the Following (Blow Into Your Hands After Each)

1. Surah Al-Fatiha (7 times) — The Prophet ﷺ called it “Ar-Ruqyah” — THE ruqyah.

2. Ayatul Kursi (3 times) — The greatest ayah in the Quran. Shaitan cannot approach you when you recite it.

3. Last 2 Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (1 time) — The Prophet ﷺ said: “These two verses are sufficient for whoever recites them at night.”

4. Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas (3 times each) — The three Quls. The core of self-ruqyah.

5. Specific Healing Dua:

“Bismillahi arqika, min kulli shay’in yu’dhika, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin hasidin. Allahu yashfika, bismillahi arqika.”

Meaning: “In the name of Allah I perform ruqyah on you, from everything that harms you, from the evil of every soul or jealous eye. May Allah heal you.” (Muslim)

Step 4: Wipe Over Your Body

After reciting, blow gently into your palms and wipe over your entire body — head, face, chest, arms, legs. Three times.

Step 5: Drink Ruqyah Water (Optional)

Recite the above over a bottle of water. Blow into it. Drink from it throughout the day.

When to Do Self-Ruqyah

  • Every night before bed — the Prophet’s own practice
  • When you feel spiritually heavy
  • After someone compliments you — evil eye can come from admiration without saying MashaAllah
  • As part of your Morning Duas guide

Red Flags — What Is NOT Ruqyah

Avoid anyone who: asks you to be alone in a dark room, uses non-Quranic words, gives you talismans to wear, charges excessive money, claims to work with “good jinn”, or asks for your mother’s name.

Real ruqyah is the Quran. Period. You have access to it. You don’t need a middleman between you and Allah’s words.
